Family luxury hotels for the winter break
The winter school break is when many UAE families travel together, and a good family hotel makes the whole trip easier: room to spread out, a kids’ club the children look forward to, dining that works for everyone, and transfers that do not test anyone’s patience. This guide covers what we check for families, where we suggest looking this winter, and how we plan it.

Rooms that work for families
The room is where a family holiday succeeds or struggles. We look for:
- Connecting rooms and suites. At many hotels, connecting rooms are a request until the hotel confirms them. We ask for written confirmation, so you are not split across corridors on arrival.
- Villas, residences and chalets. Two- and three-bedroom villas, hotel residences and catered chalets give everyone their own space with one front door.
- Space for a nanny or helper. An adjoining room or a villa with a separate bedroom, so your helper is close by and comfortable.
- Occupancy rules. Hotels set a maximum number of guests per room, counting children and infants. We match your family to rooms that fit the rules, so there are no surprises at check-in.
Kids’ clubs, properly checked
A kids’ club can make a holiday, but no two are the same. Before we recommend a hotel, we ask about the age ranges and opening hours, whether the club is included or charged, whether there is a separate programme for teenagers, and how babysitting is arranged in the evenings. In the Alps, we also check the ski school for children and book lessons early, since group places in December are limited.
Dining that suits Gulf families
Good family dining is about choice and timing as much as the menu. We ask each hotel how it can cater for your family, including halal meals where you need them, early dinners for younger children, in-room or in-villa dining, and private dining for larger groups. We confirm dietary requirements in writing before you arrive, rather than assuming.
Where to go this winter
- The Maldives. Beach villas with private pools, calm lagoons and kids’ clubs, about four hours from Dubai. See our guide to luxury Maldives resorts from Dubai.
- The Alps. Gstaad, St. Moritz, Zermatt and Courchevel, with ski-in hotels, catered chalets, ski schools for children and plenty to do for those who do not ski. See our guide to luxury ski hotels in the Alps and our Alps winter week.
- European cities. London and Paris in December, with festive lights, winter markets and family suites near the parks. Cold, bright and easy to combine with a few days of sun.
- Seychelles and Mauritius. Warm in December, with beaches, private pool villas and room for the whole family.
December fills early
The festive weeks are the busiest of the year at many family resorts. Larger villas and connecting rooms are limited in number, many hotels set minimum stays over Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and flights during school holidays fill quickly. If your dates are fixed, start early. We will always tell you plainly when something is not available and suggest the closest alternative, rather than holding out false hope.
Your family winter checklist
- Passports. Check every passport in the family, including the children’s. Six months’ validity beyond your return date is a sensible rule, as some countries and airlines ask for it. Requirements differ by destination and nationality, so check the official immigration website of each country you visit or transit.
- Visas. Check entry rules for every nationality in your party. Some visas need an appointment weeks in advance.
- Children travelling with one parent. Some countries and airlines ask for a consent letter. Check with official sources before you travel.
- Rooms. Connecting rooms, cots and extra beds confirmed in writing.
- Transfers. Child seats requested in advance, a vehicle large enough for luggage and ski bags, and seaplane timings that fit your flights.
- Kids’ clubs and ski school. Registered or booked before you arrive.
- Dining. Dietary needs confirmed with the hotel in writing.
- Travel insurance. Cover for every traveller, including winter sports if you plan to ski.
