Luxury ski hotels in the Alps
Few places change the pace as completely as an Alpine village in snow. Courchevel, Zermatt, St. Moritz and Gstaad each have a small number of luxury hotels, and the differences between them matter more than their star ratings. This guide covers how to choose, what to think about if not everyone skis, and how we plan the journey from Dubai.
- Season
- December to March; some resorts into April
- Flights from Dubai
- To Geneva, Zurich or Milan, then a private transfer
- Book
- Early for Christmas, New Year and the February school holidays
- Ideal for
- Couples, families and mixed groups of skiers and non-skiers
Ski-in/ski-out or a village hotel
The first decision is where the hotel sits in relation to the slopes.
- Ski-in/ski-out hotels open directly onto the piste or sit beside a lift. You step out in your boots in the morning and glide back to the door in the afternoon. For families with children in ski school, this is the simplest arrangement. Courchevel 1850 is known for this kind of access, and several hotels in Zermatt and St. Moritz sit close to the lifts.
- Village hotels sit in the centre, among the shops, restaurants and cafés. Reaching the slopes means a short walk, a hotel shuttle or a village lift. In return you have the life of the place around you in the evening, which suits groups where only some people ski. Gstaad is a good example.
Many luxury hotels soften the trade-off with a heated ski room, skis carried to the lift for you and a car to the slopes on request. We confirm exactly how it works at each hotel before we recommend it.
The four villages, briefly
- Courchevel (France). Part of the Trois Vallées, one of the larger connected ski areas in the Alps. Courchevel 1850 has a concentration of palace-grade hotels and direct piste access from several of them. Reached by private transfer from Geneva, or by a short onward flight to the Courchevel altiport in suitable weather.
- Zermatt (Switzerland). A car-free village beneath the Matterhorn. Guests arrive by train from Täsch, and hotels meet you at the station with an electric shuttle. High-altitude skiing gives a long season, and the village is pleasant for walkers.
- St. Moritz (Switzerland). Grand hotels, a frozen lake used for winter events, and the sunny Engadin valley. It suits travellers who want elegance off the slopes as much as on them. Reached by road or rail from Zurich or Milan.
- Gstaad (Switzerland). A chalet village with a quiet, discreet character, a road transfer from Geneva. Good for a week where skiing is one activity among several.
If not everyone skis
Many families from the UAE travel with grandparents, younger children or guests who would rather not ski, and the Alps work well for them. A good hotel in these villages offers a spa with an indoor pool, mountain restaurants reachable by lift or on foot, sledging, ice skating, snowshoe walks and sleigh rides. Zermatt and St. Moritz have scenic mountain railways that need no skis, and Gstaad has winter walking paths through the valley.
For children, we book ski school before you travel, ask about private instructors who speak English, and check whether the hotel runs a kids’ club in the winter season. If you are planning a December trip with children, our guide to family luxury hotels for the winter break covers rooms, kids’ clubs and a pre-travel checklist in more detail.
When to go, and when to book
The season runs from December to March, with some higher resorts open into April. Snow varies from year to year, so for a December trip we lean towards higher villages such as Zermatt and Courchevel 1850.
Availability tightens early in the holiday weeks: Christmas and New Year, and the February school holidays in France, Switzerland and the UK. Hotels often set minimum stays over these dates, and the larger family suites and chalets go first. If you want to spend New Year’s Eve in the Alps, please read our note on festive rules before you fix your dates. January and March tend to be quieter, with good snow and more choice.
Flights from Dubai and private transfers
Geneva, Zurich and Milan are the usual gateways, each served by flights from Dubai of roughly six to seven hours. Which airport we suggest depends on the village: Geneva for Courchevel and Gstaad, Zurich or Milan for St. Moritz, and Zurich or Geneva for Zermatt. From the airport, the road transfer generally takes between two and three and a half hours depending on the resort and conditions. We arrange a private vehicle with space for luggage and ski bags.
We also look at rail where it makes the journey easier, for example the train to Zermatt. Entry requirements for Switzerland and France depend on your nationality, so we check the Schengen visa position for every passport in your party and remind you of the timelines well before departure.
