Where to spend New Year’s Eve in luxury
New Year’s Eve is the one night of the year when luxury hotels behave differently. Minimum stays apply, a gala dinner is often part of the booking, and rooms with a view are spoken for months in advance. This guide explains the rules you will meet, how they vary between the Maldives, Paris, London, the Alps and Dubai, and how we plan the night.

The festive rules, explained
Over Christmas and New Year, most luxury hotels apply conditions that do not exist for the rest of the year. The details differ from one hotel to the next, so we describe them in general terms here and confirm the specifics for any hotel we shortlist.
- Minimum stays. Resorts in the Maldives and ski hotels in the Alps commonly require a minimum number of nights spanning New Year’s Eve, often a week or more. City hotels in Paris and London tend to be more flexible, though some set a minimum of a few nights around 31 December.
- Compulsory gala dinners. Many hotels include a New Year’s Eve gala dinner as a mandatory supplement for every guest in house that night, with a separate rate for children. The same sometimes applies to Christmas Eve. The supplement is charged whether or not you attend, so it is worth knowing before you choose.
- Stricter cancellation terms. Festive bookings usually carry earlier deadlines and larger deposits than the standard policy, and some are non-refundable once confirmed.
- Full prepayment. Some hotels ask for the entire stay to be paid well before arrival. We tell you the dates so nothing lapses.
None of this should put you off. It simply means deciding earlier, with the full picture in front of you.
Maldives
New Year’s Eve in the Maldives means a beach dinner under the stars, fireworks over the lagoon and a quiet first morning of the year. It is also the week when resorts are busiest. Minimum stays are the norm, villa categories sell out early, and seaplane transfers need to be timed around daylight. Our guide to luxury Maldives resorts from Dubai covers the choices between overwater and beach villas and the transfer options.
Paris
Paris in late December is lit for the season, and the palace hotels on the Right Bank and the quieter addresses in Saint-Germain each celebrate in their own way, from a formal gala to a more intimate dinner in the hotel’s restaurant. Rooms with a view of the Eiffel Tower are limited and go first. The city’s celebrations gather around the Champs-Élysées, so we think carefully about where you will be at midnight and how you will return to the hotel. Combining Paris with London is straightforward by train; see our Paris & London journey.
London
London’s fireworks over the Thames are ticketed, and hotels along the river or in Mayfair and Knightsbridge arrange their own dinners and parties for guests. For families, a suite near Hyde Park with a quiet dinner in the hotel can be a gentler way to see in the year, with the festive lights and winter attractions during the day. Road closures on the night are extensive, so we plan the evening around the hotel rather than across the city.
The Alps
A ski village on New Year’s Eve has a particular charm: torchlit descents, dinner by the fire and fireworks over the snow. It is also the week when Alpine hotels enforce their longest minimum stays, often from the days before Christmas through to early January, and when ski school places fill early. If you are considering it, our guide to luxury ski hotels in the Alps covers the villages, slope access and the journey from Dubai.
Dubai
Staying at home for the night has its own appeal, and Dubai celebrates with fireworks at several points across the city. Hotels with a view of the displays sell their gala dinners and view rooms early, and many require a minimum stay of a few nights over the date. For families, a beach resort with a kids’ programme for the evening lets parents enjoy dinner while the children are looked after close by. Our Dubai staycation journey shows how we usually arrange a few nights in the city.
Questions we ask before you confirm
- Which nights carry a minimum stay, and can we shift the dates by a day to meet it comfortably?
- Is the gala dinner compulsory, what does it include, and is there a children’s rate or a children’s dinner elsewhere?
- Where exactly are the fireworks visible from, and which room categories have that view?
- Are there dress codes, seating times or age limits for the evening?
- What are the deposit, balance and cancellation deadlines, and is any part non-refundable?
- How do transfers run late on New Year’s Eve and early on New Year’s Day?
We put the answers in writing with your quote, so you can compare hotels on the same terms. If you are travelling with children, our guide to family luxury hotels for the winter break covers rooms and kids’ clubs, and if you want privacy over the holidays, see our notes on hotels with private pool villas.
