Luxury Maldives resorts from Dubai
For travellers in the UAE, the Maldives is one of the easiest island escapes: a direct flight of about four hours, a transfer across the lagoon, and a villa over the water or on the sand. This guide covers the choices that shape your stay, and how we plan it for you.

A short flight from Dubai
Direct flights from Dubai to Malé take about four hours, which makes a long weekend possible and a week feel unhurried. Most luxury resorts have a team that meets guests at the airport and walks them to their transfer, so the journey continues without waiting in queues of your own.
Before you fly, every traveller completes the Maldives IMUGA traveller declaration within 96 hours of arrival. Entry conditions depend on your nationality, so please check the official Maldives immigration guidance for each passport in your party. We remind you of both when we send your travel details.
Seaplane, speedboat or domestic flight
How you reach your island depends on where the resort sits, and it is worth deciding before you choose the resort, not after.
- Speedboat. Used by resorts in the atolls closest to Malé. It is the simplest option for families with young children, and it can usually run after dark, which suits late arrivals.
- Seaplane. Used by resorts further out. The flight over the atolls is a highlight of the trip, but seaplanes fly in daylight only. If your international flight lands late, you may need a night near the airport first. Baggage allowances can also be stricter than on your international flight, so we confirm the limit for your resort before you pack.
- Domestic flight and boat. Used by resorts in the far north and south. A short domestic flight is followed by a boat to the island. It opens up quieter atolls and some of the most private resorts.
We match the transfer to your flight times, so you are not left waiting at the airport and you arrive with the afternoon still ahead of you wherever the schedule allows.
Overwater villa or beach villa
An overwater villa is the classic Maldives image: steps from your deck into the lagoon, open views at sunrise or sunset, and complete privacy from the water. It suits couples and honeymooners most of all. Some resorts set minimum ages for certain overwater villas, and we check this before we shortlist anything for a family.
A beach villa opens straight onto the sand, often with shade from the garden and a shorter walk to restaurants and the kids’ club. Many guests find it calmer with young children. If you cannot choose, a split stay of a few nights in each is often possible, subject to availability.
Private pool villas for families
For families, the right villa matters more than the right island. Many resorts offer two- and three-bedroom pool villas and residences, or villas that connect, so everyone has their own space while staying together. We ask each resort about kids’ club ages and hours, babysitting, in-villa dining, and how the restaurants can cater for your family, including halal meals where you need them, and we confirm the answers in writing.
Planning a December trip with children? Our guide to family luxury hotels for the winter break covers connecting rooms, kids’ clubs and a pre-travel checklist, and our notes on hotels with private pool villas set out what to ask about heating, fencing and privacy.
A Maldives honeymoon from the UAE
The short flight means you arrive rested rather than worn out by the journey, which is a quiet advantage after a wedding. We tell your resort you are on honeymoon so the welcome reflects it, and we can arrange private dinners, spa time for two and a villa with the view you have in mind. When to go
The drier north-east monsoon season runs roughly from November to April, with calmer seas and more sunshine, which is also the most popular time to travel from the Gulf. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind, though there are still many bright days.
UAE National Day, the school winter break, Christmas and New Year’s Eve are among the busiest weeks. Larger family villas are limited in number at most resorts, and many resorts set minimum stays over the festive season. If your dates are fixed, it is worth starting early.
