UAE National Day luxury escapes 2026
National Day on 2 December usually brings a long weekend, and it arrives just as the weather in the region turns pleasant. It is a natural moment for a short escape: an hour to Oman, four hours to the Indian Ocean, or a few nights at a resort in Dubai itself. This guide sets out the ideas we return to each year, and how to make a short break feel unhurried.

- Around 2 December; holiday dates subject to official announcement
- Length
- Three to five nights, depending on the dates confirmed
- Book
- Early; the same weekend is busy across the region

A note on the dates
UAE National Day falls on 2 December each year, with Commemoration Day marked just before it. The exact public holiday dates for the private sector are confirmed by the UAE government closer to the time, and they may be adjusted so that the holiday joins a weekend. Until then, treat any dates you see as provisional. We plan with flexible options where we can, and confirm the final nights once the official announcement is made. If your plans depend on a particular day, we will say so clearly before you commit to anything.
Short-haul: Oman
Oman is the easiest change of scene from Dubai. Muscat is about an hour’s flight, or a drive of a few hours, and Musandam and the mountain interior can also be reached by road. For a long weekend, the choices are quite distinct: a beach resort on the coast near Muscat, a mountain retreat on the Saiq Plateau at Jebel Akhdar where the air is cool in December, or a tented camp in the desert. The short journey means you arrive on the first evening with the whole weekend ahead of you.
Entry requirements for Oman depend on your nationality and residency status, so we check the current position for every traveller in your party before you book.
Indian Ocean: Maldives and Seychelles
Early December sits in the drier season for the Maldives, with a direct flight of about four hours from Dubai. Three or four nights is enough for an overwater villa, a few lagoon swims and a sunset cruise, provided the transfers fit your flights. Seaplanes fly in daylight only, so for a short break we lean towards resorts reached by speedboat, or we time the flights so you do not lose a night at either end. Our guide to luxury Maldives resorts from Dubai explains the transfer choices in detail.
The Seychelles are a little further, at around four and a half hours’ direct flight, and warm in December. Mahé and Praslin have resorts with private pool villas, granite beaches and room for families. For a long weekend, a resort on Mahé keeps the onward journey short after landing.
National Day is a busy weekend across the Indian Ocean because so many UAE residents travel at once. Resorts may set minimum stays and the larger villas go early, so this is one trip where starting well ahead makes a real difference.
The Red Sea
The Red Sea offers warm water and a short flight. On the Saudi coast, new resorts have opened in recent years with a strong focus on privacy, diving and quiet beaches, and they are a few hours’ flight from Dubai. On the Egyptian side, long-established resorts around the coast combine beach time with a day trip inland for those who want one. Both suit couples and families who want sun without the longer journey to the Indian Ocean. We check entry requirements and the latest flight schedules for the dates you have in mind.
A staycation in Dubai
Staying in the city is often the calmest option over National Day, and early December is a lovely time to be outdoors in Dubai. A beach resort on the Palm or the Jumeirah coast, a desert retreat an hour from the city, or a skyline suite downtown each offer a different weekend, and none of them involves an airport. The city marks the holiday with celebrations and fireworks, so if you would like a view of them, say so and we will check what each hotel has planned. Our Dubai staycation journey shows how we usually arrange it.
Making a short break work
- Flight times. We match outbound and return flights to check-in and check-out, and ask hotels about early arrival and late departure so you do not lose half a day at either end.
- Transfers. Private transfers booked in advance, with child seats where needed, so the journey from the airport is as quiet as the rest of the trip.
- Minimum stays. Some resorts require a minimum number of nights over busy weekends. We tell you before you choose, not after.
- Documents. Passport validity, visas and any traveller declarations checked for every member of the party.
- Flexibility. Where the official dates are still unconfirmed, we favour hotels with reasonable change terms and set them out in writing.
If you are travelling with children, our guide to family luxury hotels for the winter break covers connecting rooms and kids’ clubs, and if privacy is the priority, see our notes on hotels with private pool villas.
