Hotels with private pool villas
For many of our clients, a private pool is the reason to travel: a place to swim without an audience, where children play within sight of the terrace and the day is not arranged around a shared pool deck. This guide looks at how pool villas differ across the Maldives, Bali, Thailand, the Seychelles and Europe, and the questions worth asking before you book one.
- Where

- Families with young children, couples and anyone who values privacy

Why a private pool changes the stay
A villa with its own pool turns the hotel inside out. The hours around it become the quiet centre of the day: an early swim before breakfast, a shaded afternoon with the children, a late evening in the water after dinner. For guests who prefer to swim in modest dress, or who simply want the holiday to feel like their own, this privacy matters more than any restaurant or spa.
Not every “pool villa” offers the same thing, however. Some pools are large enough to swim in; others are plunge pools for cooling off. Some are screened by walls and planting; others are overlooked from a path or a neighbouring terrace. The questions below are how we tell the difference before you arrive.
What to ask before you book
- Is the pool heated? In the tropics it rarely matters, but in Europe and in the hills of Bali, an unheated pool can be too cold for small children for much of the year. Some hotels heat pools on request for a supplement; others do not.
- Is there fencing or a safety cover for toddlers? Many villa pools have no barrier at all. Some hotels can install a temporary fence or a pool alarm on request; others cannot. With children under five, we ask this first and put the answer in writing.
- Which way does the villa face? Sun orientation decides whether the pool is in sun in the morning, the afternoon or both, and how much shade the terrace has. A west-facing pool suits sunset swims; an east-facing one is pleasant early and cooler by late afternoon.
- How large and how deep is it? We ask for dimensions rather than adjectives, and for the depth, which matters for children learning to swim.
- How private is it really? Is the pool visible from a path, the beach or another villa? Is it a true private pool or shared between a small group of villas?
- When is it cleaned? Usually in the morning; we ask the hotel to work around your routine.
- Is there a shallow area? Some family villas include a shallow section or a small paddling pool alongside.
Maldives
The Maldives has a high proportion of pool villas, on the beach and over the water. Beach pool villas tend to have larger pools and a garden that screens the terrace, which suits families; overwater pool villas have a smaller pool set into the deck above the lagoon, which suits couples. Some resorts set minimum ages for overwater villas, and we check before shortlisting. For the transfer and seasonal detail, see our guide to luxury Maldives resorts from Dubai.
Bali
Bali is one of the places where private pool villas are the norm rather than the exception. Resorts in Ubud set villas among rice terraces and river valleys, with pools that look out over the jungle; resorts on the south coast around Uluwatu and Nusa Dua sit on cliffs and beaches. Many villas have a separate living pavilion, which works well for families and longer stays. Evenings in the hills can be cool, so heated pools are worth asking about.
Thailand
Phuket, Koh Samui and Krabi have resorts with pool villas on hillsides and beaches, looking over the Andaman Sea or the Gulf of Thailand. Several offer multi-bedroom pool residences for extended families. Seasons differ between the two coasts, so your dates shape which island we suggest.
Seychelles
On Mahé, Praslin and the private islands, pool villas sit among granite boulders and tropical gardens above the beach, with space that larger families appreciate. The Seychelles are around four and a half hours’ direct flight from Dubai and warm through the UAE winter break, which makes them a steady choice for December.
Europe
Private pool suites are less common in Europe, but they exist at resorts in Greece, on Mallorca and Ibiza, along the Amalfi Coast and in parts of Portugal and the south of France. The pools are often smaller, the season runs from late spring to early autumn, and heating matters at either end of it. For a summer trip, our Amalfi Coast journey shows how we arrange it.
Booking a pool villa for a family
Pool villas are a small share of most hotels’ rooms, and two- and three-bedroom versions fewer still. For the school holidays, and especially New Year’s Eve, they go early and often carry minimum stays. We ask for the villa category to be confirmed in writing, request a cot or extra bed where needed, and check the distance to the restaurants and kids’ club, since a very private villa can also be a long walk. For the wider family checklist, see our guide to family luxury hotels for the winter break.
